I don’t care that it was 31 yesterday, or that so much mixed precipitation came from the skies that my kids had school cancelled. I started perusing CL for boats.
Not at all because I need one
; quite the contrary. No, I just like looking at what floating money pits people are pushing on others, as the sun starts to come out and the ice melts, and people’s tax returns are burning a hole in their pockets and they think, “Hey, I bet it would be fun to pick up a cheap boat to tool around in this summer! Let’s see what’s on Craigslist.” A story that ends most often with, “I can’t wait to sell this POS!” There’s an adage that goes, “The two happiest days in a man’s life are when he buys a boat, and when he sells that boat.
Here you have our first installment: “Cheap Boat” is literally the title. However, there’s no price.

LOL
“This is a boat that floats*...
only
flaws are it needs to be cleaned which should be a 2 weekend job.”
* I’m not 100% sure about that
**Umm. May I?
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
I mean, it might need *one or two* other things. It looks like it’s been abandoned in someone’s yard
for at least a few years
since there was a Bush in the White House. The interior is garbage. The structure under that is probably questionable. The engine *might* run, but not without a bit of love. OH and the windshield is broken, the trailer that looks like it should be included, isn’t, and it’s a total no-name brand I’ve never heard of.
The prop is banged up and the drive is held up by a string. If the hydraulics were working, that wouldn’t be there.
I wonder if he’ll take a half-finished PBR tall boy in trade? Nah, I’d rather have half a cheap beer than any part of that thing.
Maybe I’m being too harsh, I’ll find a less-easy target next time.

This has been an episode of Boats of Craigslist, brought to you by my years in the marine world where I witnessed first hand the terrible build quality issues in even the nicest boats we handled.

Im always boat shopping because of the dream I have of buying a boat, fixing it up and then spending a week or 2 driving the length of lake powell with some friends before selling it.

“Buying an old boat and fixing it up” is a timeless dream. It’s the end to one of my favorite movies, Shawshank Redemption.
At this point, most of my friends don’t like to ask me my opinion on a used boat they’re looking at because I’ll shoot them down 99% of the time. On the other hand, I have one very persistent friend who has gotten a few thumbs up’s from me, but hasn’t been able to pull the trigger yet.
It was worse when I was genuinely boat shopping last year, I had several friends sending me links daily, sometimes more often, and every time I’d have some reason why not.

That is beautiful. Be sure to have either a) enough money that you can just work on the boat full time for several years or b) enough to PAY someone else to do that. Then please invite me for a cruise, I’ll bring the gin.
See the line: “West bottom was $25k upgrade... asking $29,900.” Yeah that’s about right.

I have two current marine wants. First is to get rid of my current boat. Depending on how the house sale goes, I’ll be getting rid of it soon. The second is picking up a 230SX or a 229.....mmmm. 230 is a legit 70 mph boat with the big motor. The 229 is newer.
This boat has been listed for I don’t know how long.

This one I’ve just found. Pics suck but that boat is sleek.

Restoring a boat makes restoring a classic car look like a nice summer of wrenching!
But having one of these finished and all to your self...a brother HAS to dream, right?

I’ve got just the boat for you! Runs great. Starts right up. It’s got that lovely old two-stroke smoke until you crack the throttle.
I think it needs a new auto-choke solenoid, I’ve got to look into it. But it’ll have a new water pump shortly along with my annual maintenance of plug swap, lower unit oil swap, and carb rebuilds.
It’s a Harley Davidson!

The Glastron with the Volvo V-8 looks like a nice boat, man.

My family is actuallyHunting for a shared ski boat. Not as fun when there is a budget and no need to fix it up

My dad has a boat that honestly needs to be made gone.
I lost its cover in a windstorm years ago and someone stole the prop.
Now it just sits.
Between that and the cavalcade of wrecked cars, the herd needs thinning

Used surf boat in the 30k range. Something less than 5000 lbs dry ideally.

Ooh. Are the older Centurion Surf Editions in that range yet?

Nope. We have some distant relations I used to do work for that was an exclusive dealer for them during that time. In fact those editions were mostly his doing. Hoping he can score is a good deal

Hmm. Does that mean you ARE looking at those, but that they aren’t in that range except you might have an insider deal more or less?
I don’t know if you remember but I picked up a 2003 Super Air Nautique 210 last year for 28.5. It’s a phenomenal boat, but not amazing at surfing unless you modify; we got it pretty good with a ‘suck gate’ and moderate ballast last year. Before my gate came off and sank.
But I’m a Nautique fanboy......
Have you seen the latest - I think Centurion - with the center rudders where the tracking fins would be? Pretty amazing stuff if you’re into surfing.

Yeah the steering fins... Is not that neat it turns out

Really? What do they do (or more importantly, NOT do?)
There’s also that RAM FILL ballast... that seems gimmicky.
